Notes from the Camino Walking Tour Day 3 & 4: Cabins in the Middle of the Way … Cabañas de Lires

While many people choose to walk the entire 28km from  Muxía to Finisterre, (or Finisterre to Muxía which was our choice), we chose our next destination because it was located right in the middle of these two Galician coast treasures. Cabanas de Lires was where we called home for our next two nights. It literally felt like we were in a family home, with chicken, geese, and even a donkey wandering in the gardens and pool area out back. The Cabañas were perfect for Lydia and two of our veteran pilgrims who enjoyed their space with a kitchen, sitting area, and room for guests upstairs!! The rest of us were ensconced in the cozy house, Casa de Jesús, with our own rooms with private baths. Both nights we had amazing homecooked meals, first night a seafood delight and the second a wonderful BBQ and octopus “pulpo” feast…

Walking to the Cabanas on the Camino was so pleasant because the 14km on either side of the house are without a single stop.  No bar, no restaurant, no albergue in sight. On our day to Lires, we decided to start at the lighthouse in Finisterre and begin this enchanting walk down the hill, through a small hamlet, past fields and finally through a few small towns.  Our walk today was so exhilarating because within the first few kilometers coming down through Finisterre we were greeted by a festival, where we were able to taste the local wares and stock up for a picnic along the way. Once we finally got out of town, we only got disoriented once as we immediately left town, but once we discovered the loving green arrows guiding us to Muxía, we never got lost again.  (Thank you to person who painted those arrows there!!! ) Other than the Cabañas, our other highlight was midway through the walk when we sat at a crossroads, gazed out to the sea and had a wonderful picnic. It was truly a classic Galician day!

We too are planning the walk from Santiago to Finisterre and then on to Muxia. Do we need reservations at Cabanas?

    1. Hi Esther. I doubt reservations are required, but it’s not a bad idea to make them, especially if you are there during peak season. ¡Buen Camino!
